Bengaluru: A 22-year-old notorious chain snatcher was shot at in both legs by the Banasawadi police after he attacked them with a lethal weapon in a bid to escape early on Monday morning. The accused, Syed Suhail, has over 15 criminal cases pending against him.

On Monday morning, the police received a tipoff that a gang of three men riding on a single bike, led by Suhail, was moving around suspiciously. Sub-Inspector Sharath Kumar and Constable Rafiqh rushed to the spot and tried to flag the bike down on Fire Force Station Road in Banasawadi. But Suhail attacked them with lethal weapons and tried to flee.

But Mr Sharath Kumar, despite being injured, opened a round of fire in the air warning Suhail to stop and later shot him in the legs. Mr Sharath Kumar alerted the control room and additional police forces were rushed to the spot. The police team shifted Suhail to Bowring Hospital, and Mr Kumar and Rafiqh to a private hospital.

The police said that the notorious chain-snatching gang regularly struck early in the morning between 6 and 8, and in the evening between 4 and 8.
Mr Ajai Hilori, DCP (East), said that Suhail and his gang targeted senior citizens. In May this year, he stabbed a 63-year-old man, Chandrashekar, brutally when he resisted robbery and made away with 63 gm gold chain.
