More than 300 detained for anti-Neet protests in Chennai

Police said that protests were held in nine places and candlelight marches were conducted in 14 places across the city.

Chennai: As many as 343 people, including 50 women, were arrested and released by the Chennai police after they protested at various parts of the city on Sunday against the Central government on Neet issue after the suicide of MBBS aspirant S. Anitha in Ariyalur on Friday.

Police said that protests were held in nine places and candlelight marches were conducted in 14 places across the city. Around 100 members of the May 17 organisation, Tamizhar vidyal katchi and Dec. 3 organisation, under the leadership of Praveen Kumar staged a protest in T. Nagar and walked towards the BJP state headquarters shouting slogan against central government around 11 am when police arrested them.

Ten members of other student outfits who tried to stage a protest in front of the BJP office were also arrested. Similarly, around 30 students staged a road roko in the subway close to Loyola College in Nungambakkam. A police team rushed to the scene to disperse the agitators.

Members of political parties like DMK, VCK and CPI(M) were also arrested and released for staging protests in different parts of the city. Police disclosed that a total of 730 persons conducted silent meetings and candlelight march in 14 locations in Chennai in remembrance of Anita.
