GHMC scam: 12 more persons held
Hyderabad: The Central Crime Station police arrested 12 more persons in connection with a GHMC scam in which contractors had submitted fake and fabricated bills to claim lakhs of GHMC funds illegally.
“GHMC executive engineers had entered into a contract for desilting of nalas in Central Zone. While submitting the weighbridge bills for payment, contractors submitted fake and fabricated bills, they presented bills to show that several trips were made to dispose of the silt. It was discovered that the registration numbers of the vehicles they claimed to have used were those of two-wheelers and three wheelers,” said a senior official from CCS.
In April, the GHMC Central Zone officials had identified 27 contractors who attempted to cheat the civic body of Rs 1.8 crore and booked them on criminal charges. The contractors were given the job of desilting nalas as part of the pre-monsoon work. They had revealed to the police that 12 assistant engineers from GHMC were part of the scam. The police had arrested the engineers.
During the audit in April, GHMC officials found that the contractors mentioned several vehicle numbers that included those of two-wheelers and autorickshaws. It is evident that such vehicles cannot transport silt. On investigation, it was found that bills amounting to Rs 1.8 crore were false.
Later, Mr Mohan Singh Rathod, superintendent engineer, lodged a complaint with CCS seeking investigation.
