Pune: 'Sold' to pimp, Bangladeshi woman escapes from confinement

She was allegedly brought here by her stepmother a few days back and was sold to a suspected pimp for Rs 20,000.

Pune: A 26-year-old woman from Bangladesh, confined in a house here and allegedly tortured to work as a sex worker, has escaped from her captors exposing a flesh trade racket.

"The woman was confined with other five to six girls in a house near Katraj here and was subjected to physical torture," said Vijaysingh Gaikwad, police inspector, Bharti Vidyapeeth police station.

She was allegedly brought here by her stepmother a few days back and was sold to a suspected pimp, identified only as Sohail, for Rs 20,000, he said.

On June 29, she managed to escape from captivity and started looking for a "bus to Bangladesh" when she was spotted by some alert people.

"Meanwhile, some alert citizens spotted her and she was taken to police station. Since there is a language barrier, we are trying to understand which region in Bangladesh she belongs to and trying to trace the house where she was allegedly kept in confinement," Gaikwad said.

The woman is currently with an NGO here. Police today booked her stepmother and the pimp under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.
