Telangana: Man robs cabbies, nabbed

Farooq used to hire cabs and rob their drivers at gunpoint.

Hyderabad: Police arrested a robber who used to threaten cab drivers with his country-made pistol and snatch their money. The robber, Md. Farooq from Malakpet, used to hire cabs stating he wanted to go to places like Mahbubnagar, Kurnool and Raichur and rob drivers when they passed through lonely places. Farooq is involved in 10 such cases. Police seized a country-made pistol from him.

Police said that on May 26, Farooq hired a cab from Nampally saying that he wanted to go to Mahbubnagar. “The victim, Nenavath Raju, thought Farooq was a genuine passenger. When they reached Kothakota, Farooq bought him dinner at a dhabha,” said a senior police official.

“When Raju filled petrol from a bunk Farooq saw that he was using a credit card. After Raju drove the vehicle a few km and reached a lonely spot, Farooq pulled out his pistol and asked him to give his credit card. He also took Rs 6,500 from the car’s dashboard. Later, he went to a petrol bunk, swiped the card and got Rs 22,000 from there. cab driver Raju had told him the password fearing for his life,” said the official. Police said that Farooq robbed nine others in a similar manner in different parts of the city.
