Rape-murder has Kerala on the boil

Activists blame police machinery.

KOCHI: Women activists cutting across political divide held demonstrations in various places in Kerala on Tuesday seeking stringent action against the culprits involved in the brutal murder of Jisha, a Dalit student and a native of Iravichira near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district five days ago.

Demanding a fair and impartial probe, they expressed shock over the callous manner in which the police handled the investigation initially. Condemning police action and seeking justice for the victim, they took out a protest march from High Court Jn to the office of the city police commissioner in Ernakulam.

They staged a sit-in before the St. Teresa’s College as the police prevented them from proceeding further. Addressing the protestors, writer M.K. Sanu said the brutal incident was a "blot on the humanity and the cultural heritage of the human society."

"The police machinery has failed to investigate the case properly and we feel that there was a deliberate attempt to cover up," said Thasni Banu, an activist who along with many others visited the place on Monday on a fact-finding mission.
“The brutality committed on the body of Jisha cannot be described in words,” she said in a choking voice. "Despite such tell-tale evidence, the local police has not shown any urgency in the investigation."

BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan called for capital punishment for the guilty. In Thiruvananthap- uram several women activists and organisations took a protest march to the Secretariat with their mouth covered in black cloth.
P.K. Sreemathi MP, T.N. Seema, ex-MP, and several others addressed the protesters.

Members of Lawyers Union including former classmates of Jisha held a protest march to the office of the police IG in Ernakulam alleging lack of progress in the probe. Protests were also held in Kozhikode, Thrissur and several other places.
