Kerala rape case: Rights panels step in, register cases

The Commission directed the police to submit a detailed report on the progress of the investigations by May 28.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes on Tuesday registered a suo motu case into the incident of the brutal murder of a dalit law student Jisha at Perambavoor. The Commission directed the police to submit a detailed report on the progress of the investigations by May 28.

In a separate directive, the Kerala Human Rights Commission ordered that the investigations into the case be handed over to the Crime Branch. The direction was issued by Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice J B Koshy taking suo motu cognisance of the case based on the reports that appeared in the media.

The SHRC chairman directed DGP T P Senkumar to initiate the required measures in this connection. Chairman of the State Commission for Scheduled castes and tribes, Justice P N Vijayakumar strongly condemned the brutal incident and called for setting up of a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident which he termed “heinous.”
