Egmore police assaulted by drunken gang

Getting a call about four men creating menace at Egmore park, victim had rushed to the spot, following which the incident happened.

CHENNAI: A four-men gang in an inebriated state assaulted a 35-year-old head constable attached to Egmore station on Friday. It was around 4:30 pm on Friday when the Egmore police received a phone call about four men creating a menace at the Egmore park, said a police officer at Egmore station.

The constable, Dhananjayan (35), rushed to the spot and saw the four men drinking in open and abusing passers-by. He then warned them and asked them to leave. As miscreants paid no heed to his words, two policemen who followed him nabbed them.The accused are identified as Balachandran (22) from Purasawalkam, Yuvaraj (25) from Pattalam , Praveen Kumar (21) from Royapuram and Prince (23) from Korupettai. Police later said that they have assaulted the head constable.

A case has been lodged against the men under sections IPC 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), IPC 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and IPC 506(1) (Punishment for criminal intimidation - an act of threatening another with injury to his person or reputation) and remanded them in judicial custody. Head constable Dhananjayan who suffered minor injuries returned home after the treatment.
