CHENNAI: An 18-year-old student suffered serious injuries after he fell from the fourth floor through the well of an under-construction liftin a hostel in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the police, S. Deepvaya, 18, a native of Nagpur in Maharashtra, was a first-year student in a private engineering college at Ramapuram.
Sources said Deepvaya’s friends were celebrating the 19th birthday of Shenat from their class. Deepvaya, who used to stay in a different hostel, went to the party along with his friends. The boys had consumed alcohol and cut a cake at midnight on Sunday.
The hostel has five floors and a basement for parking. Construction work for the lift was underway and the workers had broken the wall and closed it with a grill gate. The gate, however, was not sealed, the police said.
At around 12.15 am, Shenat chased Deepvaya to apply cake on his face. Deepvaya who did not know about the lift work leaned over the grill gate.
“The gate fell into the lift well and Deepvaya fell into it to the ground. His spinal cord was completely shattered and he suffered broken legs and arms. His shoulder bones were displaced. Since the lift was arranged till the basement, he fell over five floors and a height of more than 50 feet,” a police officer said.
The Royalanagar police rushed to the spot and sent him to a private hospital nearby. The police said that he was in a serious condition in the ICU, quoting the doctors. The Royala Nagar police registered a case and further investigations are on.
