2 smuggle drugs into Hyderabad, nabbed

The seized drug is worth about Rs 2.4 crore in the market, said officials.

Hyderabad: Narcotic drug shipped to Hyderabad from Gujarat was caught by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths at Kamareddy by-pass road on the Hyderabad — Nagpur (NH 44) on Wednesday night. The seized drug is worth about Rs 2.4 crore in the market, said officials.

Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials launched an operation on Wednesday night on the Nagpur-Hyderabad by-pass road and intercepted a car.

While searching the vehicle, officials found bags concealed in the boot in which white powder was packed and being transported.

“The powder was confirmed as Alprazolam, a banned psychotropic substance under NDPS Act. Prima facie, it was found that the drug was coming to Hyderabad from Gujarat. The value of the seized contraband would be around Rs 2.4 crore,” said a senior DRI official.

The officials also seized the car which was used for transporting the narcotic drug. Two persons who were smuggling the drug have been arrested. The official said that Alprazolam can be used to decrease physical tension, restlessness and also fear and panic.

The side effects of continuous consumption results in poor memory, problems with speech and coordination, reducing blood pressure and heart rate. It is also used in toddy to increase the effect, he said.
