Hyderabad: An attempt to learn swimming without supervision ended in a tragedy for family when four children including a girl drowned in the Erragunta lake at Gollaguda village of Yacharam police limits on Sunday.

According to police, the children informed their father Abdul Raheem that they were going to a shop to purchase chocolates. They proceeded to the Yerragunta lake and they entered the water ostensibly to learn to swim.

"Imran entered the deep water and began drowning,” police said. “In an attempt to rescue Imran, the remaining three children drowned in water.” The locals noticed the mishap after one of the children's bodies was found floating in the lake, and called the police. “We went to the lake and retrieved the bodies of the four children," police said.

After the children were identified, police informed their family of the tragedy. The police shifted bodies to the mortuary for postmortem. Police said they had filed a case of death under suspicious circumstances and started investigations.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the children had died by suffocation caused by water entering the lungs. A final view would be taken after the police received the forensic exam result, an official said.
