100 LPG cylinders explodes on NH following a fire from the engine of a lorry

The lorry was on its way to Ulavapadu in Nellore district from Kurnool with 306 gas cylinders belonging to Bharat Gas

Nellore: Hundred LPG cylinders were exploded one after another following a fire that broke out from the engine of the lorry transporting the Cylinders after midnight near Daddawada village in Komarole mandal of Prakasam district on Thursday.

The lorry was on its way to Ulavapadu in Nellore district from Kurnool with 306 gas cylinders belonging to Bharat Gas.

The mishap took place on Ananthapur-Guntur National Highway. People living near to the highway and motorists using the road took to their heels with panic as the cylinders started exploding one after another.

However, lorry driver Mohan Raju managed to escape from the scene and alerted the police.

A team of police, led by Komorole sub-inspector V. Samba Sivaiah, rushed to the spot and stopped the traffic movement half kilometre away from the burning lorry.

They have also alerted their counterparts in Giddalur to stop the traffic coming from the other side.

Sambasivaiah told Deccan Chronicle that they have managed to vacate people living in 30 odd houses located within 300 metres radius to the lorry with the help of local leaders.

Though there were no casualties, the lorry was reduced to ashes.

Fire wing personnel, along with police, jumped into action and doused the flames from 200 metres away from the lorry laden with cylinders.

The timely action by the police such as halting the traffic movement on the NH prevented a major disaster, locals said while adding that it was a miraculous escape to them. Police are investigating the incident.
