Tamil Nadu: Vehicles with hired drivers must be exempted, say owners

The members also quoted a long pending complaint about an IAS officer's son's death where the driver fled and the issue is still going on.

Chennai: A day after the State Government has informed the Madras high court that the recent notification directing motorists to carry their original license while plying their vehicle would not be implemented till Tuesday, a section of people engaged in public sector recently approached the officials of transport department to waive off the rule permanently.

The members of Tamil Nadu Stone Quarry and Sand Lorry Owners Association said the move is not feasible for them as owners of the vehicle for transportation engage the drivers—including lorries, autos and cabs.

“The owner would have the original license of the driver during the duty. Unlike other departments like construction where workers are hired for a period of time where they work in front of us, in transportation sector we give our property to them for a brief period. For the safety of our vehicle, we have his original with us. Once this rule comes into force, the credibility of the driver is lost,” said Yuvraj.

He further added, “During accidents, they would leave the car and flee the scene. To produce the driver before the magistrate, we would need his license. Also, we have to produce the original RC, permit and the driver’s license during the police enquiry as the owner is held responsible for the accident.”

The members also quoted a long pending complaint about an IAS officer’s son’s death where the driver fled and the issue is still going on.

“This would lead to loss of credibility and property in the future. At least, some people must be given an exception as we have already been greasing hands to avail permit and this would only increase bribery at regional transport offices (RTO),” said one of them.
