Chennai: Duo from Delhi nabbed for snatching chains

The bike was a stolen vehicle and on Tuesday, a team had tracked the vehicle near Walltax road and rounded up the duo.

Chennai: Two persons from Delhi have been held by the city police in connection with the spate of chain snatching incidents in the city. The duo Sanjay (34) and Sandeep (44) are natives of Delhi and had come to the city with three other gang members by flight, police sources said. Police nabbed the suspects by zeroing in on the registration number of a motorbike involved in several chain-snatching incidents. The bike was a stolen vehicle and on Tuesday, a team had tracked the vehicle near Walltax road and rounded up the duo. On Tuesday, city police were left on the backfoot after a spate of chain snatching incidents were reported in the city with over 40 sovereigns robbed in 24 hours. The duo were staying at a lodge in Periamet and were planning to leave the city by train. Investigations revealed that the duo regularly came to Chennai from Delhi by flight and targeted elderly women. Police sources said that the duo are part of a gang which is involved in several robbery cases in and around Delhi too. Police suspect other members of the gang to be loitering in the city. Meanwhile, a special team has set off to Delhi to nab other members of the gang and retrieve the stolen jewellery.
