A decent burial, state’s onus: Karnataka High Court

The state had earlier informed the high court that of 29,518 villages in the state, 6,053 villages and 281 towns still do not have a burial ground.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court directed the state government to lay down a comprehensive project granting required lands for the purpose of burial grounds to 6,053 villages and 281 towns in the state, which do not have a burial ground. It has asked the state to submit the proposal before the court.

The state had earlier informed the high court that of 29,518 villages in the state, 6,053 villages and 281 towns still do not have a burial ground.

It had said that the concerned deputy commissioners have been directed to purchase required lands and Rs 10 crore has been earmarked. On Tuesday, the High Court expressed displeasure and observed that it is the duty of state government to facilitate the dead with a decent and honourable funeral.

The court took note of the affidavit submitted by the state that around 11 lakh acres belonging to it has been encroached, to which the court directed it to lay down a comprehensive project in clearing the encroachments.

Illegal religious structures

The High Court directed the state government to submit the measures taken by it on the demolition of illegal religious structures in public places in accordance with the Supreme Court order by September 29.

The Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court has filed a suo motu public interest litigation on the matter.
