A traffic head constable assaults elder, suspended
Bengaluru: A traffic head constable attached to the Vijayanagar police station was suspended after he allegedly assaulted a senior citizen with a helmet during an argument.
The suspended policeman, Jayaram, has been accused of assaulting Ramakrishna, 65, a resident of Nagarabavi.
The incident took place near Vijayanagar Water Tank bus stop around 1.30 pm on Sunday. Jayaram, who was in plainclothes, was going to the police station on his bike and stopped at the signal. Ramakrishna came in the car and stopped behind Jayaram’s bike.
Though the signal was red, Ramakrishna honked several times and an irritated Jayaram reportedly shouted at Ramakrishna, saying, ‘can’t you see the signal’. But Ramakrishna insisted him on moving a bit further and make way for his car. However, Jayarama asked him to wait till the signal turned green.
An annoyed Ramakrishna got down from his car and picked up an argument with the policeman. Losing his temper, Jayaram allegedly slapped Ramakrishna and assaulted him with the helmet. As Ramakrishna fell down, a stone hit his face and there was an injury next to his eye. Other commuters staged a flash protest.
DCP (Traffic-West) Shobharani rushed to the spot and assured the agitators of disciplinary action against the policeman. After a preliminary probe, she suspended Jayaram pending inquiry.
Meanwhile, Ramakrisha, who got himself treated at a hospital, filed a complaint against the Jayaram at the Vijayanagar police station. The policeman is booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC.
