Hyderabad: The Second Additional Sessions Judge Court at LB Nagar on Tuesday sentenced a man to five years in jail for chopping his son’s hand as punishment for using mobile phone at nights to watch movies.

According to the police, Qayyum Qureshi (42) had picked up a fight with his son Mohammed Khaled Qureshi (18), as the latter was regularly using his mobile phone late at nights to watch movies.

The incident, which took place on March 5 last year, at Wadi-e-Mustafa in Jalpally village under Pahadishareef police station limits, saw Qureshi chop the wrist of the right hand of his son Khaleed with a butcher’s knife when he was fast asleep.

His wife, who was also sleeping, woke up to the screams of Khaled and rushed him to a hospital, where the boy had to undergo surgery for amputation of the hand.

The victim’s mother then lodged a complaint with the Pahadishareef police the next day, following which a case was registered against Qureshi under section 307 of IPC and was arrested, said the police.

Following investigation, the case was charge-sheeted.

The court, after conducting a trial, convicted Qureshi for the offence and sentenced him to undergo five years of imprisonment and directed him to pay Rs 5,000 towards penalty.
