Elderly couple end lives in Chennai corporation park
CHENNAI: A couple was found dead in a corporation park in Ashok Nagar on Wednesday morning. Police have registered a case on suspicious death and are investigating.
The preliminary report says that the couple consumed pesticide meant for plants in the park.
The deceased identified as Irudhaiyaraj (61) and his wife Pushpamary (58) were employed in the park on contract basis by the Chennai corporation. According to reports, the bodies of the couple were found in a park belonging to the Chennai corporation on 48th Street at Ashok Nagar. The incident came to light when morning walkers found Irudhayaraj lying dead on the pedestrian ramp with bleeding ears. A few minutes later the park supervisor found Pushapamary dead inside the room.
On being informed, Ashok Nagar police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to the Omandurar government hospital for post-mortem.
According to police, the couple worked as gardeners and maintenance staff for the past three years. They were also given a single room accommodation on the park premises. Sources claimed that the couple was unhappy that they had to work to meet their needs while they were aged, and took the extreme step.
Devendra, their only son lives with his family in Nagapattinam. The couple did not want to depend on him and wanted to lead their lives on their own, police quoted Devendran as saying. Ashok Nagar police have filed a case and are investigating whether the couple committed suicide after ingesting poison or if there is any other reason.
