Secunderabad: Interstate gang robberies on trains leave cops baffled
Hyderabad: The railway police of the Secunderabad urban division nabbed five interstate gangs and recovered around Rs 80 lakh worth properties from them in 2017. Out of Rs 4.42 crore properties lost by railway passengers, the police could recover Rs 66.84 lakh. The detection rate has come down from 46.08 per cent in 2016 to 35.58 per cent in 2017.
The cases registered in 2016 were also detected in 2017. Due to which, the detection rate dwarfed, said the police. Theft on AC coaches is a new trend this year.
After a two-month long operation, 2 kg gold was recovered from a Haryana-based gang. “After analysing the modus operandi, it was found that the suspects travelled in the same train. After verifying the tatkal tickets booked at various stations, the suspects were identified and arrested. Twenty-two cases were solved,” said S. Rajendraprasad, DSP, Secunderabad railway police.
The Sholapur gang tampers signals at isolated places and loot passengers. “This was a new type of offence and the vulnerable spots were identified. While attemp-ting to tamper a signal, they were caught red-handed and 11 cases were detected,” he added.
The new trend this year was zip operating offence on AC coaches. The issue has been taken to the notice of higher ups in the railway department, he said.
