Tiruchy: Rs 1.43 crore robbed from BHEL co-operative bank
TIRUCHY: Tiruchy was rocked by yet another heist in the wee hours of Friday as miscreants gained entry into the premises of the BHEL Cooperative Bank by breaking open a side window and made away with Rs 1.43 crore, at Tiruverumbur near here.
This is the third major robbery in Tiruchy district this year. Robbery took place at Punjab National Bank (PNB) premises at suburb Bikshandaarkovil near Kollidam tollgate on January 25 this year followed by the more recent private jewellry shop robbery in busy Chinthamani area here on October 2.
Police said the miscreants broke open one of the side windows of the bank premises, entered the bank and made away with Rs 1.43 crore. Police said preliminary probe showed that the bank staff including cashier Lakhsmi had kept the huge amount in the cash counter drawer, as they were unable to open the lockers to keep the cash.
The CCTV recordings show a masked rain-coat wearing man getting into the bank through the window broken open and moving around the cash counter.
A police team led by Superintendent of Police Tiruchy Ziaul Haque visited the scene of the crime and took a few bank staff including cashier. Lakhsmi for interrogation.
The services of fingerprint expert and sniffer dog were pressed into service at the crime spot. Further investigations are on.
