Bengaluru: Three NGO members held for extortion bid
Bengaluru: Three members of a NGO have been arrested by Kamakshipalya police who had demanded money from a textile factory owner and threatened to stage a protest if their demands were not met.
The accused, identified as Chandan (26), Gagan Gowda (26) and Basavaraju (27), members of Karnataka Praja Shakti, approached the owner of Bharath Mono Textile factory in Kamakshipalya and demanded Rs 50,000, to cover up the fact that he was using banned plastic material for production.
The accused threatened the factory owner that if he did not comply their organisation, which works for the welfare of factory workers, would force him to shut down the factory indefinitely. The arrest of the NGO members was accidental. The Kamakshipalya police got an alert that a dead body was lying near the factory and went to check. The instead came across a commotion inside in the factory. After seeing the police, the accused tried to escape, but were caught. Based on the complaint filed by factory owner Umesh Kumar Agarwal, the police arrested the accused
