Bengaluru: Telecom racket busted, one held

The unit was being run for the past few months, the police said.

Bengaluru: Sleuths of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in a joint operation with vigilance officials of the Telecom Department cracked down on an illegal international telephone exchange unit and arrested the accused.

The accused, Tameezullah (38), was operating the unit from a flat on the fourth floor of a building in Bismillah Nagar in Suddaguntepalya off Bannerghatta Road. The state-run BSNL is said to have incurred losses of several crores due as he illegally converted international calls into domestic calls.

Tameezullah and his associate Suboch, a Bangladeshi private telecom firm employee, had set up the illegal exchange in the city which bypassed the telecom gateways. Vigilance officials of the Telecom Department alerted the police about the racket following which the raid was conducted. The unit was being run for the past few months, the police said.

While the police seized two gateway routers, 64 SIM cards and computer accessories worth Rs 2 lakh from the accused, they also believe that the technology is a threat to national security.
