Bengaluru: Housemaid sells God story', steals jewels worth crores

Tricks plastic factory owner into giving keys to the house.

Bengaluru: A 25-year-old woman, who worked as a domestic help, and her husband were arrested in Koramangala for stealing gold and diamond jewellery and silver articles worth crores of rupees from her employer’s house over the last one-and-a-half years.

The accused have been identified as Reshma and her husband, Kiran Kumar, 28, an auto driver. They have two children and are residents of Koramangala. Reshma was working as a domestic help at the house of Jayanth S. Beda, who owns a plastic factory in the city.

Reshma and Kiran wanted to lead a lavish life and hatched a plan to steal valuables from Jayanth’s house little by little. Reshma had been pilfering away for the last one-and-a-half years and handing over the stolen goods to her husband, who sold them in the city and used that money to buy a car, a bike and lease out a flat in Koramangala for Rs 30 lakh.

Reshma had made her employer believe that if she and her husband performed a certain pooja at their house while they were away, the God would appear in their house. Jayanth and his wife fell for the story, and had given the couple gold and silver articles to perform poojas while they were out.

When Jayanth and his wife checked their locker, they found that over 4 kg of diamond, gold and silver articles were missing. They couple immediately lodged a complaint with the Koramangala police station and the police picked up Reshma, who confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The police have recovered 3.75 kg of gold and diamond jewellery and 2.5 kg of silver articles, a car and a motorcycle and the lease documents of the flat from the two accused.
