Amber captain, officers sent to judicial custody
Kochi: Kochi Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Saturday remanded in judicial custody for fourteen days the captain and two other officers of MV Amber L whom. The cargo carrier had collided with a fishing boat off the Kerala coast killing two fishermen, and a person went missing. The coastal police detained its Greek captain Georgianakis Ioannis, 30, and second mate officer Galanos Athanasios, 33, also Greek, and able seaman Zawana, 36, of Myanmar on Friday and their arrest was recorded on Saturday and produced before the court.
Coastal police circle inspector T. M. Varghese submitted that they were responsible for the incident. They were booked under 280 (rash navigation), 427 (committing mischief), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304 (causing death by negligence), 201 ( causing the disappearance of evidence of offence) of IPC and 57 of Kerala Police Act.
The police submitted that the collision happened within 14 nautical miles from the shore and 11 persons in the fishing boat Carmel Matha were injured, in the wee hours of June 11. As per the report submitted to the Directorate General of Shipping on June 15, the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), based on available digital and physical evidence, identified the ship.
