Chennai: A heart-broken young woman allegedly took the extreme step to end her life as well, and hanged herself at her house, after her boy friend immolated himself due to family problems.
According to police, V. Mani alias Manikandan (22) native of S. Kolathur in Kovilampakkam, was in a relationship with S. Dhibya (22) of Sathya Nagar in Kovilampakkam. Mani worked in a private factory in the area, and the girl was pursuing her final year B.Sc degree, sources said.
Police said Mani was an alcoholic, and on Tuesday he came home inebriated. Irked by this, his parents did not allow him inside the house. It is said that his parents scolded him in front of the neighbours.
On Wednesday morning, he allegedly poured kerosene on himself and set himself on fire.
Mani was taken to the Chrompet government hospital, but later shifted to the Kilpauk medical hospital. However, Mani died during the early hours of Saturday.
Devastated over his death, Dhivya also hanged herself in the ceiling fan of her house on Saturday morning.
Police had recovered a suicide note from the spot stating that the woman was upset over her boyfriend's death. The body was sent for postmortem.
