Chennai: Within a few hundred metres from police joint commissioner's office in St Thomas Mount, three persons in an auto-rickshaw attempted to steal money from a fuel station in wee hours of Friday. Two employees who were sleeping in the petrol bunk thwarted the burglary attempt.

According to the police, Lalith (27) of Porur and Rajendiran (29) of St. Thomas Mount were on the duty in the petrol bunk, located at Butt Road, when the incident happened around 3 am. “After accounting the day’s collection, Lalith and Rejendiran had slept near the bunk’s cabin in which the collection amount is kept. They hung their shirts to the glass door,” the police said.

At around 3 am, an auto-rickshaw arrived from which three persons including the driver, alighted and tried to open the glass door of the cabin. Unable to open the locked door, the trio went to the auto and brought an iron rod.

“When they hit the door with the rod the glass door shattered and the broken pieces fell on Lalith and Rajendiran,” the police added. Shocked by the trio’s presence, Lalith and Rajendiran tried to catch them. But they managed to flee the spot. But they took the employees shirts that contained Rs 1,500 before escaping.

“Lalith and Rajendiren rushed inside the cabin and checked the money box and found the Rs 2 lakh safe,” the police said.
