Bengaluru brothers drown in pond near Chennai

The bodies were retrieved on Friday morning.

Chennai: In an unfortunate incident on the outskirts of the city, two brothers, who visited their aunt’s house from Bengaluru, drowned in a pond on Thursday. The bodies were retrieved on Friday morning.

The deceased S. Sanjay (15) and S. Saravanan (12) of Bengaluru visited their aunt Prema’s house in Tiruvalluvar Nagar in Old Pallavaram to spend summer holidays. Sanjay was a class 10 student, while Saravanan was a class 8 student in Bengaluru. “The boys were staying at Prema’s house for last 10 days and they used to play along with the local boys in the evenings,” the police said.

On Thursday evening, both Sanjay and Saravanan had gone to play with other boys and reportedly went to Paalkeni pond in the locality. While they were playing in the pond, it is said that Saravanan had gone to the deeper part of the pond and struggled to wade out of the pond. “Seeing his brother drowning, Sanjay also jumped into the pond and tried to rescue him. But he also drowned. Other boys, who were terrified of seeing this, rushed to the elders and sought their help,” police added.

Pallavaram police alerted and they rushed to the spot. At As night police were unable to find the boys. However, on Friday morning, both bodies were seen floating in the pond. They were retrieved with the help of fire and rescue personnel. The bodies were sent to Chromepet Government hospital for post-mortem and Sambanthan, the boys’ father, who is in Bengaluru, was informed about the incident. Pallavaram police have registered a case and are investigating.
