Hyderabad High Court jails GMC commissioner Selvarajan Nagalakshmi

On the HC's direction, a district judge inquired and found that the construction activity was on despite a local court's stay order.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court has sentenced Guntur Municipal Corporation commissioner Selvarajan Nagalakshmi and Dr K. Vara Prasad of Guntur to one month imprisonment, holding them guilty under Contempt of Court. While allowing a contempt case moved by Dr D. Murali seeking to punish Dr. Prasad and the commissioner, Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao held that both the respondents in the case have willfully and deliberately disobeyed an order passed by the court on September 19, 2016, for stopping of construction and they have filed false affidavits in the court.

The judge ordered the commissioner to suffer one month simple imprisonment and Dr Vara Prasad two-month jail and both the contemnors would have to pay Rs 2,000 fine each within four weeks. If they default in paying the fine, they will have to be interned for one more month of imprisonment. The judge also ordered demolition of a building owned by Dr Prasad within four weeks.

Dr Murali alleged that Dr Prasad had begun constructing a seven-storeyed building in violation of court orders and alleged that the GMC commissioner had supported Dr Prasad by not implementing the court’s order.

He said that Dr Prasad had moved the High Court against the corporation for obstructing the construction of his building, but he did not inform the High Court that the construction was stayed by a court order. On the HC’s direction, a district judge inquired and found that the construction activity was on despite a local court’s stay order.
