Chennai: A Mahila court here has sentenced a 33-year old man to seven years’ RI on charges of raping a differently-abled woman and impregnating her, more than seven years ago. The victim appeared before the court along with her six-year-old daughter.

According to prosecution, the victim of Korukkupet, had gone to a meeting to receive a tri-cycle nearly seven years ago. Senthil alias Kadal Senthil, who organised the event, offered to assist her. After collecting Rs 300 from her, he gave the tricycle to her.

Since then, they became friends. Assuring he would marry her, Senthil had sexual intercourse with her repeatedly. She became pregnant in 2008. After learning this, he refused to marry her despite repeated pleas. She filed a petition before R.K. Nagar police.

The Mahila court on February 18, 2015, sentenced him to seven years RI.
Challenging the verdict, he filed an appeal before the Madras high court. On November 24, 2015, setting aside the sentence, the high court remitted the matter back to the Mahila court with a directive to frame appropriate charge in consonance with the material found in the complaint and proceed with the trial.

On January 20, the Mahila court framed charges and conducted fresh trial.
Mahila court judge R. Kalaimathi sentenced Senthil to seven-year RI. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.
