Increase in IT Act cases in Telangana
HYDERABAD: As many as 15,374 cases of crimes against women were registered in Telangana state in 2016, putting it at 14th place in the country, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. A total of 1,529 cases were reported as compared to 1,293 in the previous year. A total of 160 Dalit women were allegedly raped in the state last year. In this category too, Uttar Pradesh stood first, with 10,426 cases, and Andhra Pradesh stood fifth with 2,335 cases. The city of Hyderabad ranked fifth, with 139 cases registered in 2016, as compared to 116 in the previous year.
The state stood seventh with respect to the atrocities against Scheduled Tribes, with 375 cases registered. 41 women belonging to ST communities were raped in the state in 2016. Telangana also witnessed a significant increase in the number of cases registered under the Information Technology Act of 2000, with 538 cases of cybercrime reported. The highest numbers were registered in Uttar Pradesh (2,562), Karnataka (1,091) and Andhra Pradesh (396).
