Dowry harassment: woman poisons 2 daughters, ends life
Visakhapatnam: A housewife poisoned her two daughters and ended her life following harassment from her husband and mother-in-law over “inadequate” dowry and “giving birth to two daughters.”
The one-year-old younger daughter died while the older daughter survived and is undergoing treatment in a private hospital here. The dead were Sailaja (34) and her daughter Akshita (1). The surviving daughter is Tushita.
Sailaja was a native of Rajahmundry. She got married to Mohan Krishna, employee at a private bank and resident of Vizag city in August 2017. Sailaja’s parents gave Rs 5.4 lakh and over 100 grams of gold ornaments to Mohan’s family as dowry.
Sailaja’s mother Anantha Lakshmi alleged in her complaint to police that ever since the marriage, Mohan and his mother were harassing Sailaja for additional dowry. The harassment doubled after Sailaja gave birth to her second daughter.
Sailaja poisoned her two daughters and did it to herself on Wednesday night. The three were admitted to a hospital at Venkojipalem near MVP Colony. Sailaja and her younger daughter died on Friday. Doctors said Tushita was recovering.
In a suicide letter, Sailaja stated that her husband and mother-in-law were responsible for the suicide. The police booked a case against Mohan and his mother. No arrest was made. “A probe is under way,” said the local police.
