Bengaluru: A 30-year-old undertrial made a dramatic escape from the Parappana Agrahara central prison by hiding himself in a goods van on Tuesday morning. The prisoner, identified as David Kumar, had hid himself inside a tempo that had come to supply vegetables to the prison’s kitchen, a source from the prison told Deccan Chronicle.
The undertrial has been booked under IPC sections 224 and 225 for fleeing from lawful custody, the source added. Parappana Agrahara police have launched a manhunt to nab David.
According to prison authorities, David Kumar was about to complete a 4-year sentence and there were two more cases pending against him, all related to housebreak thefts and robberies. He was lodged at a cell in the undertrial barrack at tower-2.
He was depressed and undergoing treatment at the jail hospital. He did not mingle with others and used to wander inside the premises. Since he was undergoing psychiatric treatment, he was allowed to wear civil clothes, the source added.
The filmy escape
On Tuesday morning, around 8 am, a Tata-407 (tempo), laden with vegetables, entered the prison to unload vegetables at the kitchen. “During mornings, undertrials are allowed to access the kitchen for refreshments. The accused seized this opportunity and sneaked into the tempo and hid himself under gunny bags in its carriage section. The tempo left prison around 8.45 am and nobody noticed it. The incident came to light by Tuesday evening during a routine roll call for prisoners.
The prison officials carried out a search for David on the premises and later analysed the CCTV footage, which revealed about his escape. David hailed from Ilturu village near Sadarahalli in Devanahalli taluk and was formerly a resident of Sanjaynagar slum. His younger brother was also lodged in the prison for similar offence, a prison source stated.
Investigations reveal that after fleeing prison David had not gone to his home and the police have launched a manhunt. DIG Prisons G. Veerabhadraswamy conducted an inquiry.
