Cops caught Mirza Ahmed Baig by using CCTV footage and info from complainant.

Hyderabad: A day after a cab driver allegedly tried to rape an air hostess, the police arrested the suspect, 25-year-old Mirza Ahmed Baig for attempt to rape. The police tracked down the suspect using CCTV footages and details given by the victim.

Mirza Ahmed Baig had abandoned his vehicle in Rajendranagar and absconded after he came to know about the police manhunt. Police found him by tracking the victim’s phone which he had snatched.

Shamshabad DCP Sunpreet Singh said the suspect was arrested within 24 hours after the police received the victim’s complaint. He said that Rajendranagar was fully covered with CCTVs and it helped to crack the case fast.

“Five teams were set up to hunt down the suspect. The team first checked CCTV footages at Pillar No: 216 and found the registration number of the vehicle (AP 09 X 2865) involved in the offence. The team then collected details of suspects and when cops went to his home he was not found there. Special teams were sent to Hayathnagar, Tolichow-ki and Gandipet to track him down. Later, Baig was arrested from Gandipet and the phone of the complainant was also recovered,” the DCP said.

Police said the complainant had come out of her flat to go to a medical shop at around 2 am on Wednesday. “Mirza Ahmed Baig approached the victim in his vehicle at pillar No: 216, Dairy Farm X Road and asked her whether she wanted a drop anywhere. She said she wanted to go to a medical shop. When she boarded the vehicle he misguided her and took her to Himayat Sagar. He then tried to pull her shirt and started molesting her. When she resisted, he pushed her down and assaulted her. He dropped her after snatching her phone,” the DCP said in an official statement on Wednesday

The police has charged him with attempt to rape and robbery. The cops are checking if he was involved in any criminal offences in the past. He was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.
