Businessman's car targeted near Chennai
Chennai: In yet another attack on a businessman in Kancheepuram, a gang tried to kidnap a man from Chennai in Chengalpet on GST Road on Thursday morning at knifepoint. Thanks to the presence of an alert pubic, the gang fled the scene, leaving behind the businessman who had jumped out of his car.
The victim, Arun Kumar (28), from Royapettah who is into the business of importing printing presses, told the police that the men who got into his car from Royapettah to travel to his godown in Ambattur to see the printing machinery, had convincded him to change his route on the pretext of picking up more people interested in the deal and then tried to attack him using a sickle inside the car once the vehicle reached Chengalpet toll gate.
Palani, a member of the gang, had met him two days ago in his office and shown interest in buying some machinery. On Thursday, Palani and an associate reached Royapettah to travel with Arun Kumar to his godown. Palani told the victim that two of his business associates who were waiting near Vandalur should also be taken to the godown.
Arun Kumar, who did not want to miss a business deal, took Palani and his associate in his Hyundai Verna while driving on to pick the other two from Vandalur.
After picking up the duo, Palani told Arun Kumar that the financier was waiting in Chengalpet. As the car crossed Singaperumalkoil, the behaviour of the four traveling with Arun started changing and one pulled out a sickle and kept it on his neck asking him to move away from the driving seat when they neared Chengalpet toll gate.
A shocked Arun tried to take U-turn and then jumped out of the car. Seeing him tumble out, local residents and other motorists started gathering around him. The gang threatened them with sickles to escape from the scene.
Arun Kumar was later admitted to Chengalpet medical college for treatment. Police believe the gang was planning either to kidnap him or to carjack his luxury sedan. Kancheepuram police said they have browsed the CCTV footage from Arun Kumar's office and had got images of Palani and his associate.
