Kerala: Online racketeers play cat and mouse
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A cat and mouse game is going in the cyber world these days between the cyber police and the online racketeers, who are earning more than a crore of rupees annually. When the cyber police cracks one piracy portal, the racketeers come up with another with slight changes in the site name. In the latest instance, the Cyberdome of the state police initially cracked the infamous piracy portal 'tamilrockers.cz'. Subsequently, the racketeers came up with 'tamilrockers.ls'. When it was also cracked, they launched 'tamilrockers.ws'.
“We have already blocked the site in India with the help of the centre and hope to crack it soon,” said Cyberdome deputy commander and anti-piracy professional Varghese Babu. According to the information available online, some of the piracy portals were earning over Rs 1 crore annually. “On a review using the portal that rates the websites, it could be seen that ‘tamilrockers.ws’ was earning $1.74 lakh per annun (around Rs 1.1 crore),” said Mr. Babu. Meanwhile, producer of the Mohanlal starrer Malayalam film Munthirivallikal Talirkumbbol lodged a formal complaint with the police on Tuesday regarding piracy. The Cyberdome, which cracked online pirated copies of the movies the other day, have started efforts to trace the source of the piracy.
