Three women remanded for assault, Kerala women's panel to take up case
Kochi: The three women Liji Augustine, 42, Moli Sebastian, 44, and Teena Biju, 34, who were arrested for assaulting a mentally-ill woman on Monday morning, were remanded to judicial custody. They were booked under Sections of IPC 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
The Kerala Women’s Commission will take a suo motu case over the incident in which a mentally-ill woman was assaulted by neighbours in Vypeen on Monday morning.
“The incident is a gross violation of basic human rights. It’s a shame for a literate state when its citizens become just mute spectators as their fellow beings are subjected to brutal assault or suffer serious injuries in mishaps,” chairperson M.C. Josephine said.
The State Human Rights Commission has directed the police chief and the district social welfare officer to inquire into the incident and file a report in three weeks. It also came down heavily at the Munambam police for not coming to the rescue of the victim despite being informed of the incident.
The victim was taken to the Ernakulam General Hospital on Wednesday morning on the direction of Health Minister K.K. Shylaja Teacher. The doctors stated her condition as ‘satisfactory’ after a detailed check-up. She will be taken to the Thrissur Mental Health Hospital for psychiatric treatment on Thursday.
