Main accused in Kasganj case held

Chandan's death triggered clashes on R-Day.

Lucknow: Salim, the main accused in the murder of Chandan Gupta in Kasganj, was arrested on Wednesday.

Salim had allegedly opened fire at the Tiranga rally in which Chandan Gupta, 22, was killed. He had been absconding after the incident.

Salim’s brothers, Wasim and Nasim, have also been named as the main accused in the killing of Chandan Gupta. The three brothers have been booked under Section 302 of the IPC.

Chandan’s death had led to communal clashes in Kasganj.

IG Aligarh, Sanjeev Gupta said that Salim, son of Barkatullah, had been arrested from Kasganj. Uttar Pradesh DGP O.P. Singh told reporters that the situation in Kasganj was returning to normal and Salim had given vital information about the Republic Day clashes.

The arrest came a day after the police had put up a seizure notice at the house of the accused. Kasganj SP Piyush Srivastava said notices pertaining to attachment of properties of the accused had been pasted on their houses. Tension continues in some pockets of Kasganj though no fresh incident of violence has been reported in the past 24 hours.

A Congress delegation that was on its way to Kasganj was stopped by district officials on Wednesday in Mirhachi area in Etah on the border of Kasganj district.

UP sends riot report to Centre
The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has sent a report to the Centre giving details of the communal violence in Kasganj, where a person was killed on the Republic Day.

Meanwhile, the UP police in on tenterhooks about the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) declaration that it will take out Tiranga Yatras across Uttar Pradesh soon.

The first Tiranga Yatra led by VHP vice-president of Braj region, Sunil Parashar, began its journey in Agra on Wednesday but was terminated almost as soon as it began from Shaheed Smarak.

District magistrate Gaurav Dayal and SSP Amit Pathak reached the spot and took the memorandum from the activists who were forced to disperse when they started shouting slogans.
