Bengaluru: A 23-year-old murder accused was shot in the leg by Bengaluru Rural police on Sunday noon after he allegedly tried to escape by attacking a police constable during a spot mahajar in Jigani Industrial area.
Police said the incident took place around 3.20 pm near Cipla factory.
A team of police, led by the Inspector Mallesh attached to Jigani police station and two police constables had taken a murder accused, identified as Deepak Kumar Jha, to conduct spot mahajar in connection with a murder case.
According to the police, Deepak, who hails from Bihar, and his two associates, both hailing from Nepal, had carried out random attacks on five people on Friday night at three different places in Jigani, in a bid to loot them. One of them died on the spot.
The deceased hailed from Odisha and was returning home after work. He used to work as a security in Jigani. Among the other four victims two hailed from Odisha, one from Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. They were working either as security guards or boiler operators in Jigani.
SP (Rural) B. Ramesh told Deccan Chronicle, “After the incident came to light, police launched a manhunt to nab the assailants.”
Based on credible information and the description provided by the victims, the police had arrested Deepak and his associate Santhosh Jafra from Bannerghatta on Saturday evening, while the third one is still on the run.
“Deepak was creating ruckus in the jail on Saturday night. He was quarreling with the policemen on duty. On Sunday, Inspector Mallesh along with the team had brought Deepak for Mahajar to the crime spot. In a bid to escape, he attacked a constable Muniappa by wrapping a chain around his neck. When Inspector Mallesh warned him, he came charging at him following which the inspector shot him below his knee to disarm him. Both, the police constable and the accused were rushed to Vijayshree hospital where they are being treated currently,” Ramesh added.
Jigani police who has identified the third accused are trying to trace him. “Deepak is a notorious offender. His father had come to Jigani few years ago and had settled down. He was working as a labourer. We need to check his past records and verify as to how many cases have been pending against him,” Ramesh said. Jigani police have registered a case and begun investigation.
