CPM Allowed To Hold Protest In Mumbai Against Gaza Genocide

Mumbai police has allowed the CPI(M) to hold “peaceful protest” in Mumbai against the alleged Gaza genocide

Mumbai: The Mumbai police has allowed the CPI(M) to hold “peaceful protest” in Mumbai against the alleged Gaza genocide. The police have informed that the protest would be allowed to be held at Azad Maidan, a designated site for demonstrations.

The approval came after the party moved the Bombay High Court, challenging earlier rejections by the police. The court had directed the police to clarify their position on the matter. Following this, the police informed the court that the protest could be allowed at Azad Maidan. A division bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad then permitted the event to proceed, provided it remained peaceful.

In its petition, the CPI(M) challenged three separate orders issued by Mumbai Police — dated June 19, July 15, and July 31 — all of which denied permission for the protest. The party termed the rejections as arbitrary and unjustified.

The CPI(M) stated that the demonstration is intended to express solidarity with the people of Gaza, who are reportedly suffering under a humanitarian crisis. The party described the protest as part of a global movement advocating for a ceasefire in Palestine.

This was the second time the party had approached the high court. Earlier, the same bench had criticised the party for not prioritising issues affecting Indian citizens, instead focusing on conflicts happening thousands of miles away. The judges had remarked that merely speaking up for Gaza does not amount to patriotism, urging the party to be patriots.

After the court’s adverse observations, the party had issued a statement criticising the high court bench.
