Congress–BJD Alliance Talk Stirs Odisha Politics Ahead Of 2027 Local Polls
Mishra noted that any move would depend on the prevailing political situation and the interests of Odisha, reiterating that the party’s leadership would take an appropriate call at the right time: Reports

BHUBANESWAR: A fresh political debate triggered in Odisha on Monday after Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhakta Charan Das hinted at the possibility of an electoral alliance between his party and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), adding a new dimension to the state’s political landscape ahead of upcoming panchayat and municipal elections.
Speaking at the inauguration of a Congress office in Khordha, the PCC chief said such an alliance could materialise if approved by the party’s central leadership. He said the final decision would rest with the All-India Congress Committee (AICC).
Das indicated that broader political considerations, including coordination among “secular parties,” could influence the move. He also referred to cooperation witnessed during previous Rajya Sabha elections, suggesting it could be extended to electoral politics if the leadership deems it necessary. He added that the Congress in Odisha is simultaneously preparing to contest and win local body elections independently, but would abide by any directive from the central leadership in the “national interest.”
The remarks are significant given the historically adversarial relationship between the Congress and the BJD in Odisha, and have sparked speculation about a potential realignment of political forces in the state.
The BJD, led by Naveen Patnaik, did not dismiss the possibility outright. Senior party leader Debi Prasad Mishra said “possibilities exist in every field,” suggesting that evolving political circumstances could shape future decisions.
Mishra noted that any move would depend on the prevailing political situation and the interests of Odisha, reiterating that the party’s leadership would take an appropriate call at the right time. He also alluded to ongoing speculation about the BJD’s potential alignment at the national level, though he refrained from offering a definitive position.
Political observers say even the suggestion of a Congress–BJD alliance marks a notable shift in Odisha’s political discourse. With local body elections approaching, attention is now focused on the respective high commands and whether exploratory signals translate into a formal electoral understanding.
If realised, such an alliance could significantly alter the state’s electoral dynamics and reshape traditional political equations.
