Congress MP Imran Masood on Tuesday said that Priyanka Gandhi will prove to be a strong Prime Minister like Indira Gandhi, and deliver a "decisive treatment to Bangladesh": Reports
NEW DELHI: While senior leader Rahul Gandhi has been the face of the Congress, voices have begun appearing within the party to pitch his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the prime ministerial face.
There have often been demands from a section within for giving a bigger role to Priyanka Gandhi after the party’s successive poll defeats.
Congress MP Imran Masood on Tuesday said that Priyanka Gandhi will prove to be a strong Prime Minister like Indira Gandhi, and deliver a "decisive treatment to Bangladesh".
Masood was talking about the action to be taken in the context of the situation in Bangladesh, where Hindu minorities are facing persecution. He added that Priyanka Gandhi would make a better Prime Minister and act in the manner in which Indira had in the past.
Speaking to reporters, Masood said, "Is Priyanka Gandhi the Prime Minister? Make her the Prime Minister and see how she will retaliate like Indira Gandhi. She is Priyanka Gandhi. She has Gandhi added behind her name. She is the granddaughter of Indira Gandhi, who inflicted so much damage on Pakistan that those wounds still haven't healed. Make her the Prime Minister and see how she will retaliate. You won't dare to do that."
When asked about Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP played a balancing act, saying, "Rahul Gandhi will act too… Rahul and Priyanka are like two eyes on the same face. They are not separate."
Recently, Priyanka Gandhi had termed as "extremely disturbing" the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh over alleged blasphemy and urged the Indian government to raise the issue of the safety of Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist minorities with the neighbouring country.
Sensing trouble within the Congress, BJP spokesperson Pradip Bhandari said on X, “Open fight between Rahul and Priyanka camp in Congress… Divide in Congress out in the open… Robert Vadra and Priyanka Gandhi’s open dissent against Rahul Gandhi… Open fight in the family!"
Another BJP spokesman, Shehzad Poonawalla, said, "Rahul Gandhi is facing no confidence from people. His partners in the I.N.D.I. alliance, his own party leaders and even his family members are also passing a no-confidence motion against him one after another."
"Congress MP Imran Masood has clearly said that he does not have faith in Rahul Gandhi anymore and sought to bring Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in his place. Then an endorsement to this came from Robert Vadra, who said, 'Yes, it is correct'," the BJP spokesperson said.
