Maharashtra: Congress Demands CM’s Resignation After 2 Students Die Of Suspected Drugs Overdose

Mumbai: The death of two MBA students from a prominent educational institution due to suspected drug overdose in Mumbai has caused a huge uproar in Maharashtra with the Congress alleging state’s young generation being pushed into the drug trap. It demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accusing him of being unable to handle the Home department.
“Drug and alcohol parties are taking place openly right under the nose of the Mumbai Police and government agencies, which reflects a massive failure of the Home Department and the entire system. It is due to the shameless and incompetent BJP–Mahayuti government that Maharashtra’s youth are being pushed into the trap of drugs,” said Harshvardhan Sapkal, the Maharashtra Congress chief.
His remarks came after two MBA students of a prominent South Mumbai college died of suspected drug overdose during a live music concert at Goregaon on the night of April 11. A 24-year-old female student and a 28-year-old male student died in the hospital, while a 25-year-old woman is in a critical condition. The deceased were part of 15 students who had gone to the event.
Mumbai police have arrested a total of six people in connection with the case. Preliminary investigations by the police show that some of the students from the group consumed ecstasy or MDMA before the concert. They also had proceeded to have alcohol. During the concert, several of them complained of uneasiness and were rushed to a hospital in Jogeshwari.
Sapkal asked, “How did the police fail to get wind of the drug party at the NESCO complex in Goregaon? The police and government machinery remained inactive until two people lost their lives due to drug use.” He also alleged that across Maharashtra, the system appears to be focused only on collecting percentages, monthly kickbacks and extorting money from ordinary citizens under the misuse of law.
The Congress leader blamed the BJP–Mahayuti government for ‘recklessly’ dragging the cultured youth of Maharashtra into drug addiction before demanding the resignation of Fadnavis, who also handles the Home department.
“Devendra Fadnavis is unable to handle not just the Home Department but the administration of Maharashtra itself. If he cannot manage, he should step down instead of ruining the state,” Sapkal said.
