Congress Alleges Law And Order Breakdown In Maharashtra

The Congress state chief’s remark came a day after two MBA students died allegedly due to a suspected drug overdose after attending a music event at the NESCO Centre in Goregaon in Mumbai: Reports

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Mahayuti government, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order in the state and accusing it of “pushing Maharashtra towards crisis.” Mr Sapkal claimed that the spread of drug networks from ports like Kandla into Maharashtra has reached even smaller towns, endangering the youth. He alleged political patronage behind such activities and warned that the people will not forgive the BJP-led Mahayuti government.

The Congress state chief’s remark came a day after two MBA students died allegedly due to a suspected drug overdose after attending a music event at the NESCO Centre in Goregaon in Mumbai. The incident took place on the night of April 11, when about 4,000 people attended the concert by paying an entry fee of Rs 2,000.

Referring to Goregaon incidents, Mr Sapkal questioned how drug and alcohol parties could take place near a police station at NESCO, calling it a sign of police administration failure. The Congress state chief directly held Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responsible, stating that law and order in the state has deteriorated under his leadership.

Speaking with the reporters, Mr Sapkal said that narcotics, which are destroying the youth of Maharashtra, have spread beyond major cities like Mumbai and Pune to smaller towns. He alleged that drugs are being trafficked into the state through a corridor linked to Kandla port in Gujarat.

Drawing a comparison to the film Udta Punjab, the Maharashtra Congress chief said that Maharashtra is being turned into a “sinking state” due to the government’s sin.

Attacking the BJP, Mr. Sapkal said that Tuljapur, home to the revered Tulja Bhavani, is a place of deep faith with a rich spiritual and historical legacy. However, he questioned what message is being sent when the mayor of the same town is allegedly an accused in a drug racket and was given a BJP ticket and made mayor.

He further alleged that a drug manufacturing unit was operating on farmland belonging to a relative of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He claimed that, with the intervention of MP Dr Shrikant Shinde, the accused who had been caught were released and the case was suppressed.

“If such serious crimes receive political protection, it would only push more youth towards addiction,”said he while demanding a strict action in all drug-related cases.
