CM Suvendu Adhikari proposes expanding metro services beyond Kolkata with multilateral funding
Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday announced his plans for expansion of metro railway network beyond Kolkata to prominent district towns like Asansol-Durgapur and Siliguri-Jalpaiguri for development of smooth public transportation under the state government.
He said, “The Indian Railways oversees the expansion of the Kolkata Metro network. We also have plans to introduce metros under the transport Department, like other states in the country. I will request the state chief secretary to plan metro projects in collaboration with the World Bank, ADB, or HUDCO.”
The CM added, “Our aim is to connect neighbouring important cities like Durgapur-Asansol and Siliguri-Jalpaiguri first. There will be two new metro services which will be connecting the district cities.”
He also shared a roadmap of upcoming initiatives for eco-friendly transportation systems across the city and state while informing that the state transport minister already met Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar over them.
Mr Adhikari was speaking after inaugurating 50 new AC buses, 43 CNG while 7 electric buses of the state transport corporation at Paribahan Bhavan-II in Kasba in the morning. The 50 buses cost Rs 42.22 crores. They will run in 24 routes.
