CJI Lays Out Procedure For Urgent Hearings

The Chief Justice was presiding over a special vacation bench along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, constituted to hear urgent cases requiring immediate judicial intervention

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday asked lawyers seeking urgent hearings during the vacation period to approach the Supreme Court Registry, which would scrutinise the reasons and list matters accordingly.

The observation was made while the Chief Justice was presiding over a special vacation bench along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, constituted to hear urgent cases requiring immediate judicial intervention.

As proceedings began, several lawyers mentioned matters seeking urgent listing. Responding to the requests, the Chief Justice said, “Instead of mentioning cases before the court, furnish reasons to the Registry. The reasons will be scrutinised and, if found urgent, the matter will be tentatively listed either on December 26 or December 29.”

The special sitting on Monday was arranged to ensure timely consideration of pressing matters during the Supreme Court’s vacation period, the apex court said.

On Friday, the Chief Justice had indicated his willingness to sit on December 22, the first day of the Supreme Court’s Christmas and New Year holidays, to hear urgent cases.
