Chinese Envoy Hopes 'Steadier Progress' in India Ties, Kolkata-Kunming Flight Restart
The Chinese envoy added, I want to see more Chinese tourists coming to experience amazing and wonderful India
Kolkata: China is hoping for “steadier progress” in bilateral relations with India this year. It is also looking at restoration of direct flights on the Kolkata-Kunming route following the resumption of direct flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou in October last year to boost air travel between the two neighbors.
Chinese Consul General in Kolkata Xu Wei made these assertions at the Chinese New Year Reception in the city on Tuesday evening. He said in his address, “Looking ahead to 2026, it will be a year full of hope and opportunities. For China, we will continue high-quality development, ensuring innovation benefits all. For China-India relations, we anticipate even steadier progress.”
Mr Wei added, “A sound and stable relationship between us is not only in our peoples’ fundamental interests, but is crucial for peace and development in Asia and the entire world. We are confident that with the support of the people of both nations, our friendly cooperation will scale new heights.”
Asked about the flight connectivity expansion, he later said, “We are expecting more direct flights. We already have several direct flights. We are now hoping for a direct flight from Kolkata to Kunming. It used to be operated by China Eastern Airlines. We have different talks at different levels by both sides. Hopefully, the direct flights will resume and more direct flights will happen.”
The Chinese envoy added, “I want to see more Chinese tourists coming to experience amazing and wonderful India, especially West Bengal. I'm very glad to see the Indian government relaxed visa restrictions. I met the tourism minister to discuss how to facilitate and promote our bilateral relations in the tourism sector.”
Mr Wei also informed that he has plans to organise a Chinese food and film festival and an event of books in the city apart from workshops and seminars to strengthen cultural ties.
