C’garh Forms Committee To Prepare Draft For UCC Implementation

RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh government has constituted a high-level committee to examine and prepare a draft for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, officials said on Friday.

Headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the committee also comprised retired IAS officers Shyamdhar Singh and M K Raut and advocate Mohan Pawar, and Jyotirani Singh, as members, a notification issued by the state general administration department late on Thursday night said.

The committee will study the existing legal framework relating to matters such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, and adoption.

It will also seek suggestions from citizens, social organizations, legal experts, and other stakeholders before preparing a draft UCC and submitting its recommendations to the state government.

In addition, the committee will examine the provisions and models adopted by other states in relation to the UCC to help formulate a comprehensive framework for Chhattisgarh, officials said.

The Madhya Pradesh government a couple of months ago constituted a six-member committee headed by retired Justice Desai to prepare a draft UCC Bill.

The committee is expected to submit it by July five.

The Madhya Pradesh government plans to table the UCC Bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly, scheduled to commence on July 20.
