C’garh: Few Takers For Hindi Medium MBBS Course in Chhattisgarh

No student has opted for the MBBS course in Hindi medium in the current academic session

Raipur: The initiative by the Chhattisgarh government to encourage medical students to pursue MBBS courses in the Hindi medium has proved to be a non-starter.

For, not a single student in the government medical colleges in the state has opted for the MBBS course in Hindi medium in the current academic session, a senior officer of the state government said.

“No student has opted for the MBBS course in Hindi medium in the current academic session”, director of medical education (DME) S S Paikra told this newspaper on Saturday.

According to him, two MBBS students had chosen to write their exams in Hindi language, instead of English, in the last academic session.

But no MBBS student had chosen to write their exams in Hindi language in the current academic session, he said.

Mr. Paikra however said that the infrastructure for introducing the MBBS course in Hindi medium has already been laid in the government medical colleges in the state.

Books for the MBBS courses have been translated into Hindi and made available to the students, he said.

This apart, the faculty members are also trained to teach the students willing to pursue MBBS course in Hindi medium.

The Chhattisgarh government has introduced an MBBS course in Hindi medium in the government medical colleges in the state in the last academic year.

Madhya Pradesh was the first state in the country to introduce an MBBS course in Hindi medium in the government medical colleges four years ago.

The state government has initiated several measures such as reduction in tuition fees and monetary awards for toppers in the examinations to encourage the medical students to pursue the MBBS course in Hindi medium.

However, the efforts by the state government have yet to yield encouraging results since not many students were keen to pursue an MBBS course in Hindi medium in the government medical colleges in the state.
