The CBI’s first arrest in the case came a week after Mr Adhikari handed over the probe to it from the state police within hours of the arrest of three accused from UP and Bihar: Reports

KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made its first arrest early Monday in the murder of Chandranath Rath, personal assistant of BJP heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari days before he became the West Bengal chief minister. The accused, Rajkumar Singh, is from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.
He was caught by the CBI and UP police from Chapar Toll Plaza on Delhi-Dehradun Highway in Muzaffarnagar while returning from a trip to Haridwar with his family members in a vehicle. The investigators laid a trap at the toll plaza after receiving a tip-off about his arrival. Rajkumar will be brought to Kolkata on a transit remand.
The CBI’s first arrest in the case came a week after Mr Adhikari handed over the probe to it from the state police within hours of the arrest of three accused from UP and Bihar. They were Mayank Raj Mishra and Vicky Maurya of Buxar in Bihar while Raj Singh is from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh in the case.
Among them, Raj later turned out to be a state general secretary of BJP-oriented All India Kshatriya Mahasabha. He was also purportedly seen in a viral video appealing for votes with ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogan to BJP candidate, Neeraj Sekhar Singh, at Ballia Lok Sabha seat. His mother Jamwanti Singh denied his role in the case and alleged that he was falsely implicated in the case.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate arrested history-sheeter Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu on Monday evening in the case of a land grab in South Kolkata. The accused appeared at the central agency's office in the CGO Complex of Salt Lake in the morning.
