BJP Rajya Sabha MP Regrets Anti-Netaji Remarks
Six FIRs have been registered. Police have arrested five persons and deleted 282 social media posts
Kolkata: A day after losing West Bengal government’s highest civilian honour, Banga Bibhushan award, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Roy, popularly known as Ananta Maharaj, regretted his derogatory comments about iconic freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He shared his regret in a video message on social media early Friday.
“With due respect to Netaji, I'm saying I'm extremely sorry if anyone's feelings have been hurt by some undesired comments of mine about Netaji,” the BJP MP stated in the video of 17 seconds for his and his party's damage control. Reacting to his statement, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later said, “It must be seen positively. He had made an unpardonable mistake. But he is a senior individual and has assured that he will be alert next time. This is a good sign.”
Sharing details about the steps taken by the state government into a social media trend reflecting Mr Roy's comments, Mr Adhikari added, “Law will take its own course. Six FIRs have been registered. Police have arrested five persons and deleted 282 social media posts.” Most of the arrested are from Coochbehar, the home turf of the BJP MP from the Rajbanshi community.
Though Roy regretted his statement, he has not been spared from a case which has been registered by the district police during the day following a complaint by a Forward Bloc worker, Gopal Dey, on August 7 against him.
